Professor Wendy Hall

Dr. G. Harvey Anderson holds professorships in both Nutritional Sciences and Physiology at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. Educated at the University of Alberta with a BSc and an MSc in Agriculture, he also earned a PhD in Nutritional Biochemistry from the University of Illinois. Following this, he completed postdoctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As the Director of the NSERC University-Industry Program in Food Safety, Nutrition and Regulatory Affairs (PFSNRA), he plays a pivotal role in fostering collaboration among universities, industries, and governments to enhance food and nutrition solutions. His administrative experience at the University of Toronto is extensive, having served as Associate Dean in the School of Graduate Studies, Dean and Associate Dean for Research in the Faculty of Medicine, and Chair of the Department of Nutritional Sciences. He was also an elected member of the Governing Council and served as the Executive Director of the Lawson Centre for Child Nutrition.

Moreover, Dr. Anderson has been a visiting professor at multiple institutions globally, notably in China where he spearheaded the establishment of a new academic program in clinical and public health nutrition at Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences in Guangzhou. He is also the Chair of the Board at the International Life Sciences Institute in Washington, D.C.

RESEARCH SYNOPSIS

Dr. Harvey Anderson is a prolific researcher with more than 390 scholarly articles and has mentored over 115 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. His groundbreaking studies include discovering protein-specific appetites in both rats and humans, analyzing the distinct makeup of breast milk from mothers with premature infants, and developing and evaluating the first specified amino acid mixture for both total parenteral nutrition and chronic ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. His investigations have also highlighted the advantages of introducing infant cereal to Chinese babies and studied the impacts of high vitamin and soy protein diets during pregnancy on obesity development in rodent models. Recently, Dr. Anderson has been examining how folate and choline in prenatal diets affect the health outcomes of both offspring and mothers. His ongoing clinical studies aim to leverage agricultural products to create dietary solutions that curb obesity and diabetes. His work has consistently attracted peer-reviewed funding since 1970, and he has been recognized as a Fellow by both the Canadian Nutrition Society and the American Society of Nutrition.

RECENT AWARDS

  • Dr. Harvey Anderson was recognized as an Inaugural Fellow by the Canadian Nutrition Society in 2020 for his significant contributions to nutrition science.
  • In 2016, he received the Khursheed Jeejeebhoy Award for the best integration of clinical nutrition research into clinical practice, awarded by the Canadian Nutrition Society.
  • That same year, he was also welcomed into the President's Society at the University of Alberta, an honor that celebrates his remarkable leadership and accomplishments.
